PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
ED GIACCHINO, CPIM

.

Winter made its presence known as we had to cancel what would have been an excellent Professional Development Meeting at Premier Pan. There is a lot of preparation time by the host of a Professional Development Meeting and we want to thank the management of Premier Pan for inviting us to visit their facility. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to tour their facility at a later date.

All Professional Development Meetings are an excellent method of learning. Weather they are plant tours, or speakers, all in attendance take away something that can influence the way they do their jobs. Over the course of a year we offer nine Professional Development Meetings giving our members a wide variety of exposure to different methods of doing business. We give gifts of appreciation to the speakers, presenters, tour guides etc. but it cannot match the educational value it provides for our members.

Thanks to all the hosts in the past and those that will invite us into their facility or be a speaker in the future, shaping the way we do our daily jobs.

APICS provides a wealth of tools and resources that can help you make the most of your career. Are you taking full advantage of what’s being offered to you?

The Pittsburgh chapter has several experienced certification instructors that will give you professional strength to get that competitive edge. If your company is interested in being a host organization for the CPIM and CSCP exam preparation courses, please contact Jack Martis at 866-692-7427 extension 102.

As always, thank you for being part of the APICS chapter. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at 1-866 MY APICS X 100 or ed.giacchino@timet.com

About FedEx

FedEx provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. They offer integrated business applications through operating companies competing collectively and managed collaboratively, under the respected FedEx brand. Consistently ranked among the world’s most admired and trusted employers, FedEx inspires its more than 275,000 employees and contractors to remain positively focused on safety, the highest ethical and professional standards, and the needs of their customers and communities.

Based in Pittsburgh, PA, FedEx Ground began in 1985 as RPS (Roadway Package System), a division of Roadway Services (which became Caliber System Inc. in 1996). RPS revolutionized the small-package ground shipping market. It was the first in the ground business to use bar coding and automated sorting, providing customers with relevant information about their packages. In 1993 – just nine years after its creation – RPS exceeded $1 billion in annual revenue to record the fastest growth of any ground transportation company. By 1996, it offered 100 percent coverage of North America.

Following the acquisition of the Caliber companies by FDX Corp in 1998, RPS was officially re-branded FedEx Ground in January 2000. Later that year, the company launched FedEx Home Delivery, a business-to-consumer service designed to help catalog and online retailers meet the needs of the residential market with standard features such as evening and Saturday deliveries. In September 2002, FedEx Home Delivery completed its expansion and is now available nationwide, serving virtually every U.S. address.

In September 2004, Parcel Direct became a subsidiary of FedEx Ground after FedEx Corp acquired the leading parcel consolidator. The service was later re-branded FedEx “SmartPost” and currently provides a cost-effective solution for low-weight, less time-sensitive residential shipments.

On-site registration begins at 5:45 pm, and the program starts at 6:30 pm. Fees are $12 for APICS student chapter members, $25 for APICS members and $30 for Visitors. Checks or cash may be paid at the door. No show reservations will be invoiced for the full cost.
